The future of transplantology: organs from genetically modified animals

Every year, more than 150 thousand transplants of vital organs — heart, liver, kidneys and lungs - are performed all over the world. However, the need for donor organs far exceeds the supply, and many patients have to wait for years for their turn.

To solve this problem, scientists and doctors are actively exploring new approaches, one of which is the use of organs from genetically modified animals.

  • This technology opens up great prospects for increasing the number of available donors and saving the lives of many patients.

Ruslan Bogdanovich Alikhanov, MD, Head of the Human Organ and/or Tissue Transplantation Department of the MCSC named after A.S. Loginov, MD, told about the ongoing research and experiments.
