The role of tomosynthesis in diagnosis. The patient's history of FGM

News

A 49-year-old patient applied to the MCSC Women's Health Clinic.

  • She was worried about the formation in the mammary gland.

On examination, the doctor found a dense formation in the left mammary gland behind a nipple up to 2 cm in size.

On mammography, due to the dense X-ray background, the tumor was not clearly defined. Therefore, additional research was required.

  • The patient also had an ultrasound scan, which showed the presence of blood flow in the formation.

But since there were discrepancies according to the conclusions of ultrasound and mammography, the doctors decided to perform mammography with the function of tomosynthesis.

Mammography in tomosynthesis mode (3D mammography) – this is an auxiliary radiological method of examining breast tissue.

  • During tomosynthesis, the device moves in an arc over the compressed gland, receiving many images from different angles – a layered image of the mammary glands.

This method avoids the limitations of standard mammography: minimize tissue overlap

As a result, the patient was found to have a formation of increased density with radiant contours measuring 1.7 x 1.6 cm.After a trepanobiopsy, doctors diagnosed cancer of the left breast. The patient was referred to the oncology department of the MCSC. She is currently undergoing treatment at our Center.

Taking into account the experience of working with tomosynthesis, the specialists of the Women's Health Clinic recommend this method of research to patients with a dense X-ray background.

  • Most often, this background is observed in women under 45-50 years of age.

Numerous studies have shown that tomosynthesis increases the detection of breast cancer by about 25% and reduces the number of false positive repeat cases by about 15%.
