Carotid artery stenting

News

Atherosclerosis is a disease in which plaques form in the vessels, blocking the lumen and blocking the full flow of blood.

The carotid arteries are located on both sides of the neck. These are the main arteries supplying blood to the brain.

  • Their lumen can be narrowed or completely closed by atherosclerotic plaques that slow down or block blood flow to the brain.

The place of narrowing of the vessel is called stenosis. And the higher its percentage, the higher the risk of stroke.

To prevent the development of such a condition, carotid artery stenting is performed.

  • This is a minimally invasive procedure aimed at restoring blood flow in the carotid arteries, narrowed due to atherosclerosis.

The doctor may recommend the procedure if:

  • There is a significant narrowing (more than 70%), especially with symptoms (transient ischemic attacks, previously suffered a stroke).
  • The patient is not suitable for "open" surgery (high risk of complications due to concomitant diseases).
  • The newly arisen stenosis after "open" surgical treatment.

Let's take a closer look.

What kind of preparation is required?

  • Blood tests.
  • Ultrasound.
  • CT angiography.

How is the operation going?

The surgeon provides access through the femoral artery (leg) or radial artery (arm).

  • A catheter (hollow tube) is inserted through which a contrast agent is injected to monitor the course of the procedure and to clearly localize the site of narrowing of the vessel.
  • A balloon is located on the catheter, on which, in turn, a stent (metal mesh tube) is located – it will subsequently support the lumen of the vessel.
  • The catheter is brought to the site of narrowing of the vessel, inflates and the stent is fixed in the vessel, keeping the lumen open.

How long does the recovery take?

Patients are observed in the hospital for 1-2 days.

  • But most are discharged within 24 hours after the procedure.

Double antiplatelet therapy (blood thinning with special drugs) is also performed to reduce the risk of blood clots.

Carotid artery stenting is an effective method for patients with high surgical risk. However, the choice between stenting and surgery depends on individual factors, including age, vascular anatomy and concomitant diseases.
