An increase in blood glucose levels. Non-obvious factors
NewsWith type 2 diabetes, it is very important to follow a diet and take special medications to maintain normal blood glucose levels.
However, there are factors that are not obvious at first glance, but, nevertheless, can cause fluctuations in sugar levels.
Here are some of them:
- Lack of sleep
When you sleep less than 6 hours, the body begins to react worse to insulin – a hormone that controls blood sugar levels. Studies have proven that even one sleepless night reduces insulin sensitivity by 19-25%.
- Dehydration
Lack of fluid lowers blood pressure. In response to this, the body produces the hormone vasopressin – it is also called antidiuretic hormone, because it causes the kidneys to retain fluid in the body. However, vasopressin simultaneously increases the production of glucose in the liver. An additional 1-1.5 liters of fluid per day can have a positive effect on blood sugar levels.
- Coffee
Caffeine and other caffeinated products (cocoa, tea, hot chocolate, etc.) enhance kidney function and can also cause slight dehydration. This effect is noticeable when drinking more than 4 cups of coffee a day.
- Refusal of breakfast
If you skip the morning meal, the sugar level after lunch may rise, even if the total calorie content of the food is normal. With the regular absence of breakfast, the risk of developing type 2 diabetes increases.
- Stress
Constant stress increases the level of hormones cortisol and adrenaline. They stimulate the production of glucose from proteins, reduce insulin sensitivity and increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
- A cold
When you have a cold or flu, the body also produces stress hormones to help deal with the infection. This surge of hormones can cause an increase in blood sugar levels.
- Poor oral hygiene
Problems with the gums, teeth, or chronic inflammation in the oral cavity can increase the level of substances that increase inflammation. Inflammation in this case should be understood as the accumulation of oxygen free radicals, which worsen the response of tissues to insulin.
- Inhalation of polluted air
In particular, the dust of cement enterprises can inhibit carbohydrate metabolism and increase sugar levels in people working near industrial buildings.
Take regular checkups and be healthy!
