Blepharospasm. Treatment of involuntary blinking

News

Blepharospasm is a neurological disease in which involuntary, often painful contractions of the circular muscles of the eye occur, leading to frequent blinking or even complete closing of the eyelids.

  • Simply put, this is a condition where the muscles around the eye begin to contract against the will of a person. And this is not just a "nervous tic", but a disease that makes it difficult or impossible to open your eyes, which significantly reduces the quality of life.

How does the disease manifest itself?

  • Frequent, involuntary blinking
  • Feeling of heaviness, spasm or "sand" in the eyes
  • In severe cases — functional blindness (inability to open the eyes), while vision as such does not suffer

These symptoms are aggravated by bright light, reading, watching TV, or emotional stress.

How does this affect life?

  • Inability to drive a car, work at a computer, read
  • The need to constantly wear sunglasses to protect from light
  • Psychological discomfort
  • Reduced quality of life due to constant struggle with symptoms

Is it treated?

Yes. One of the most effective methods of treating blepharospasm is botulinum therapy.

The principle of operation.

The doctor performs an injection of botulinum toxin directly into the circular muscles of the eye.

  • The drug blocks the release of acetylcholine (a neurotransmitter secreted by motor neurons of the nervous system to activate muscles), which leads to temporary relaxation of spasmodic muscles.
  • As a result, involuntary contractions stop or decrease significantly. The effect develops within a few days after the procedure and lasts for an average of 3-4 months.

How effective is it?

Botulinum therapy is the "gold standard" of blepharospasm treatment. The vast majority of patients have a significant reduction in symptoms, restoration of visual function and improvement in quality of life. The procedure allows you to regain the ability to read, drive and other activities. Regular courses of injections are required to maintain the effect.

Today, in the MCSC named after A.S. Loginov, our specialists have developed specialized treatment programs that include:

  • initial consultation with a neurologist
  • diagnosis and assessment of the severity of symptoms
  • botulinum therapy course
  • dynamic monitoring and program correction if necessary

We will select the treatment program individually for each patient, taking into account the severity of the symptoms, the location of the spasm and the response to therapy.
