Excessive coffee consumption can cause nervous system exhaustion and digestive disorders
NewsExcessive coffee consumption can lead to such negative consequences for the body as sleep disorders, headaches, increased excitability, palpitations and nausea. This was reported to the Moscow City News Agency by Antonina Starodubova, chief nutritionist of the Moscow Department of Health.
"It would be more correct, when talking about the safe amount of coffee that can be consumed by a healthy person per day, to imply the content of caffeine in the drink. An adult is recommended to consume no more than 100-150 mg at a time. If you drink coffee in the recommended amounts and do not use in addition to it a large amount of sugar, cream, confectionery, then this is just a food preference, the same as drinking tea or cocoa. Excessive consumption of caffeinated beverages, including coffee, can lead to excessive stimulation of the nervous system, increased excitability, anxiety, nausea and sleep problems, " she said.
She explained that the safe dose of caffeine for a healthy adult is up to 300-400 mg per day. Pregnant women should not consume more than 200 mg, adolescents-more than 100 mg of caffeine per day, and young children are not recommended to drink coffee at all.
"One cup of espresso can contain up to 80 mg of caffeine. Instant coffee contains up to 75 mg, and classic cappuccino-40-80 mg of caffeine, if we talk about the Arabica variety. However, in Robusta coffee, the caffeine content in a standard serving of the drink can be significantly higher, " the nutritionist added.
She noted that caffeine is also found in tea (up to 60 mg in a cup of black tea and up to 30 mg in a cup of green tea), as well as in bitter chocolate and some sweet soft drinks.
"By analogy with dark chocolate, the most useful coffee is unsweetened or with the addition of one small spoonful of sugar (no more than 2.5 g) and/or a small amount of milk. All other varieties of coffee with the addition of sugar, various syrups, cream should be attributed rather to desserts and not consumed daily. The added ingredients-sugar, milk, cream, sugar syrup, and so on-account for the main caloric content of the coffee drink. For example, in Z00 ml of Americano, an average of 10-15 kcal, in 300 ml of cappuccino-100 -120 kcal, in raf coffee-220-250 kcal. But there are also author's versions of coffee with the addition of sugar, cream, caramel, ice cream, chocolate or butter, the calorie content of which can reach thousands of calories per serving, " A. Starodubova stressed.
People with an increased sensitivity to caffeine should pay attention to cereal coffee drinks made on the basis of barley and chicory rye and oats, the expert added.
In some countries, Coffee Day is celebrated on April 17.
