Colon polyps
Colon polyps attract the attention of coloproctologists around the world, since intestinal cancer in the vast majority of cases develops from a benign polyp.
Polyps are outgrowths of the mucous membrane of the intestinal wall. Depending on the shape and features of the structure, different types of polyps are distinguished. The most unfavorable type, from the point of view of the development of cancer - villous polyps, the growth of which on the wall of the intestine resembles a carpet: the frequency of development of a malignant tumor from such a polyp reaches 40%.
Despite the benign structure of the polyps, some of them have the potential for malignancy, so regular endoscopic monitoring and, if necessary, endoscopic removal of the polyps with their subsequent histological examination is necessary. The presence of polyps in the colon can be a manifestation of genetic mutations and hereditary syndromes, in which the risk of developing cancer not only of the colon, but also of the organs of the female reproductive system, stomach, and endocrine system is significantly increased. All our patients, in the presence of multiple colon polyps, are required to undergo a genetic study for the possibility of detecting these genetic mutations and hereditary syndromes, which allows them to prevent or predict the development of oncological pathology in the future.
