A lump in my throat

A " lump in the throat "is a permanent or temporary non – painful sensation of a" foreign " body in the throat, more often decreases after eating or swallowing.

The occurrence of this sensation is possible as a manifestation of a functional disease of the esophagus. However, this symptom may also occur in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease, esophagospasm, esophageal achalasia, or even esophageal neoplasm.

To exclude other causes of a coma in the throat, a comprehensive examinationis used, including:

  • esophagogastroduodenoscopy,
  • laryngoscopy,
  • x-ray and esophageal manometry.

Daily pH-impedance monitoring is the "gold standard" for the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux and allows this group of patients to assess the height of the spread of reflux and analyze the relationship of a coma in the throat with reflux.

If the patient is concerned about the feeling of a lump in my throat the last 3 months with a frequency of 1 time per week and not less than 6 months ago, this symptom occurs between meals but not revealed signs of other diseases (gastroesophageal reflux disease, eosinophilic esophagitis, esophageal achalasia and spastic motor disorders of the esophagus, tumors of the esophagus and larynx; no dysphagia (violation of the act of swallowing) and odynophagia (swallowing causes pain)), in this case, a diagnosis of functional diseases of the esophagus – "lump in the throat". The cause of a functional coma in the throat is the dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system in response to irritating external factors.
