Peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum

Gastric and duodenal ulcer is a disease that is accompanied by the formation of an ulcer defect in the wall of the stomach or duodenum. Peptic ulcer disease has a chronic recurrent course, occurs with periods of exacerbation and remission.

Causes of the disease:

A key factor in the occurrence of this disease is an infectious lesion of the stomach and duodenum with the bacteria Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori).

In second place is the long-term use of drugs that have an ulcerogenic effect, most often these are drugs of the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (analgin, aspirin, diclofenac, citramon, etc.).

It must be remembered that an ulcer can hide a stomach tumor!

You can suspect the disease if the following symptoms occur:

  • "hunger pains" in the upper abdomen that pass after eating;
  • pain syndrome at night, from which the patient is forced to eat at night;
  • the appearance of shingles (pain under the left shoulder blade, in the thoracic region and lower back);
  • heartburn;
  • belching sour;
  • nausea;
  • vomiting at the height of pain, bringing relief;
  • the chair is black.

Diagnostics.

If the above symptoms occur, it is mandatory to perform esophagogastroduodenoscopy. in which it is possible to detect an ulcer defect, determine its depth, determine the localization, take a biopsy (sampling of tissues from the changed area for diagnostic purposes).

Additionally, the doctor may prescribe an X-ray examination of the stomach and duodenum and laboratory tests. It is necessary to conduct a mandatory diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection. The most reliable diagnostic method is the 13C-urease breath test, which will allow you to quickly and easily identify this bacterium.

Treatment.

Treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers is carried out strictly according to the prescription of a gastroenterologist. Drug therapy for peptic ulcer disease includes measures to eliminate H. pylori and heal ulcerative defects by prescribing medications that reduce the acidity of gastric juice.
