Eosinophilic enteritis

Eosinophilic enteritis is a rare disease of the small intestine, characterized by the inclusion of an increased number of eosinophils in the mucous membrane.

Causes of occurrence: not known. It is often found in people who have allergic reactions. The disease occurs in childhood, adolescence and adulthood.

Risk groups: The disease develops in people with a burdened heredity for this disease. In addition, some patients have associated allergic pathology: bronchial asthma, atopic dermatitis, eczema, allergic rhinitis, food intolerance.

Clinical symptomsthat allow you to suspect the disease.

  • diarrhea
  • abdominal pain
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • constipation
  • marked increase in blood eosinophils
  • general weakness
  • weight loss

If you have these symptoms, you should contact a specialist who will assess the condition and prescribe an examination.

The main method of examination is the morphological study of preparations of the small intestine mucosa, which reveals the presence of a large number of eosinophils in the mucosa and its thickening. This examination allows you to exclude other diseases of the small intestine and confirm the diagnosis.

The danger of the disease is that with its progression, due to edema of the mucous membrane, narrowing of the intestine can develop. In addition, the nervous system of the intestine is affected, which leads to a disorder of its regulatory function and motor disorders. Manifestations of the syndrome of impaired absorption are increasing: edema, ascites, accumulation of fluid in the pleural cavity.

Treatment.

Hypoallergenic diet: exclusion of cow's milk protein, eggs, fish, seafood. Hormone therapy with prednisone is prescribed, with a gradual reduction in the dose of the drug.
