Eating disorders are a topic that is attracting increasing attention from specialists, as conditions that significantly reduce the quality of life and require treatment.
According to research, more than 70 million people suffer from bulimia nervosa and anorexianervosa , and food excesses tend to reach the same values in terms of prevalence. Anorexia nervosa has a high mortality rate among mental disorders. And this is not just a "low weight" or "refusal to eat", but a threat to life.
At the same time, a considerable number of people do not seek medical help due to concerns about psychiatrists and psychotherapists, and because eating disorders can be ignored for a long time and attributed to external causes.
Such disorders are not limited to anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and food excesses — today, experts talk about large variants of the conditions. For example, about orthorexia or compulsive exercise, as well as about various variants of abnormal eating styles, for example, when a person "eats" negative emotions or stress.
The danger of eating disorders is that the conditions follow each other, are observed for many years, they are joined by other disorders (depression, anxiety), patients hide the symptoms for a long time, fearing the judgment of their loved ones and do not dare to seek help - "How can there be problems with food?", "I'm fine, it's just a diet", "They don't understand, I have excess weight, I see it" , etc.
Important: eating disorders require a comprehensive approach to treatment — psychotherapy, drug therapy (if necessary), support and support groups, and the help of other specialists (for example, gastroenterologists).
Take care of yourself and contact the specialists!
