How to make Robotic Surgery safer: MCSC experience

News

The IV scientific and practical conference "Safe Surgery: an interdisciplinary platform for risk management and quality of surgical care" was held in St. Petersburg on May 18-19. The event brought together specialists in the field of surgery, anesthesiology, organization of medical care and medical technologies to discuss modern approaches to improving patient safety.

As part of the section "Safe robotic surgery. Universal principles for robotic and laparoscopic practice" the report was made by the expert of the MCSC named after A.S. Loginov — Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, leading researcher of the Department of Coloproctology Vyacheslav Afandievich Aliyev.

The topic of the presentation"Safe learning curve in robotic surgery" — is devoted to one of the key issues of modern high-tech medicine: how to ensure maximum patient safety at the stage of mastering robotic technologies by surgeons. Today, robotic surgery is actively developing in many areas of medicine. Such technologies allow performing complex operations with high accuracy, minimal trauma and faster recovery of patients. However, the introduction of innovations requires not only modern equipment, but also a built-in system of training specialists.

In the report, Vyacheslav Afandievich reviewed modern approaches to teaching robotic surgery, reducing operational risks and implementing safety standards. Particular attention was paid to the human factor, which, according to research, accounts for up to 47% of the causes of complications in surgery. The expert stressed that the safety of robotic operations depends not only on the training of the surgeon, but also on the coordinated work of the entire operating team, as well as the control of equipment and technical systems.

Separately, it was noted that the training of a robotic surgeon should be phased: robotic operations should be preceded by experience in open and laparoscopic surgery, as well as sufficient surgical practice under the guidance of mentors.

The participation of MCSC named after A.S. Loginov in the conference became part of a professional dialogue on the development of safe surgery and the exchange of practical experience between the country's leading experts.
