Tongue cancer: treatment and reconstruction. MCSC patient's history

Natalia Keyer appealed to the MCSC named after A.S. Loginov with complaints about the appearance of ulcers on the tongue, which bled. Earlier, she had already contacted specialists in maxillofacial surgery, who diagnosed leukoplakia and advised Natalia to observe the development of the disease.

However, at the time of treatment at MCSC, the disease had already passed into a more serious stage and required surgical treatment. Specialists diagnosed tongue cancer.

The peculiarity of this case was that Natalia is a speech therapist by profession. And the doctors were faced with the task not only to cure the patient, but also to return to a full life.

  • The patient underwent resection of half of the tongue with cervical lymph dissection – removal of the lymph nodes of the neck.
  • According to modern standards of surgical treatment of tumors of the head and neck, with such volumes of resection, reconstruction of the lost part of the organ is required.

For the reconstruction of the tongue, specialists used a free radial flap from the anterior surface of the forearm, from which the lost part of the tongue was formed, as well as microvascular connections were restored.

As a result of the performed operation, in addition to the complete cure of the patient from a malignant tumor, a good functional result was achieved with a complete restoration of diction, which allowed her to fully return to work in her specialty.

These operations are regularly performed at the MCSC named after A.S. Loginov, providing a good oncological, functional and aesthetic result.
