Implantation of venous port systems

Relevance.
Over the past decades, there has been marked success in the treatment of cancer. The survival rate of more than 5 years in a number of nosological forms reached 80 percent or more, which became possible as a result of the development of effective programs of complex treatment, the leading place in which is given to chemotherapy. Most chemotherapeutic drugs are administered through prolonged intravenous infusions, which is associated with the risk of serious complications — phlebitis and thrombosis, which occur due to damage to the venous wall. Most often, such complications develop when drugs are injected into small-diameter venous vessels (peripheral veins). To date, throughout the civilized world, implantable venous port systems are used to improve the safety of chemotherapy procedures in cancer patients, as well as to ensure adequate vascular access, which allows not only to conduct chemotherapy, but also makes it possible to take blood for tests, inject a contrast agent in control studies, and so on. In our country, the installation of venous port systems is carried out by anesthesiologists-resuscitators, who implant port systems in patients before starting chemotherapy for the entire course of treatment. 

As part of the course, we:

  1. Learn what a port system is, how it works, and what it is used for. 
  2. We will study the indications and contraindications for implantation and removal of the venous-port system.
  3. We will study in detail the methods of implantation of the venous port system in various ways.
  4. We will study the current recommendations for the care of port systems.
  5. We will discuss the complications associated with the installation and use of the venous port system, methods of preventing their development, and also study modern approaches to their treatment.
  6. We will discuss the methods of removing the port system after the end of the course of treatment.
