X-ray examination of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum

Brief description of the study: under the supervision of a doctor, during a radioscopy, the patient drinks 200 ml of barium suspension. After that, the study is carried out polypositionally: in horizontal and vertical positions, on the right and left side, on the back and abdomen. For a detailed examination of the esophagus, the patient swallows a creamy barium suspension.

Indications for the procedure are the following symptoms:

difficulty swallowing, pain and a feeling of fullness in the chest and abdominal cavity, nausea, vomiting, additional examination before and after surgical interventions on the organs of the chest and abdominal cavity; as well as diseases associated with impaired motility of the gastrointestinal tract, cancer, diverticula, deformities, fistulas of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum.

Contraindications to the study can be determined only after consulting one of the specialists: gastroenterologist, therapist, surgeon, neurologist, endocrinologist.

How to prepare for the study. No special training is required. The study is carried out strictly on an empty stomach (it is not recommended to drink, take food or medication). The last meal should be in the evening before the study at 20: 00.

Duration of the study:

On average, the study, with the registration of the protocol and conclusion, lasts about 30 minutes. But it can be continued for up to 24 hours (if necessary or delayed radiographs are received)

How long will the recovery period after the procedure take?

After the study, the patient can lead a full life.


Irrigoscopy and irrigography

Brief description of the study: the study is performed in two stages (two stages) on the tripod of the X-ray machine. Contrast barium suspension is introduced in the patient's position on the left side on a tripod of an X-ray machine, under minimal control of radioscopy using a Bobrov device or a special device of a similar design. About 300 ml of contrast suspension is injected into the colon. As soon as the contrast mass reaches the splenic bend, the patient turns on his back and, switching the valve of the nozzle, air insuflation begins. The amount of air injected is monitored during the X-ray examination. After filling the entire colon, the tip is removed from the anus. Next, the patient is examined polypositionally in horizontal and vertical positions. After that, the patient in the toilet empties the colon, after which X-rays are performed in vertical and horizontal positions;

Indications for the procedure are the following symptoms: constipation, diarrhea, unspecified pain in the abdomen and pelvis, blood in the stool, incomplete bowel movement during defecation, additional examination before and after surgery on the colon and other organs of the abdominal cavity and pelvis, as well as diseases: cancer, diverticula, congenital anomalies, including Paire and Hilaiditi syndrome, adhesive process, inflammatory diseases (ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease - if it is impossible to perform the procedure). colonoscopies), deformities, fistulas. Also, the study can be prescribed in case of contraindications to the colonoscopy.

How to prepare for the study: it is required to follow a slag-free diet 2 days before the scheduled date of the study. Products that contribute to an increase in the formation of fecal masses and increased gas formation are excluded.

Such food products include:

  • vegetables – beets, potatoes, cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, onions, peppers, herbs;
  • fruits and berries – peaches, apricots, lemons, oranges, apples, bananas;
  • porridge – millet, pearl barley, oatmeal;
  • legumes – beans, lentils, beans, peas;
  • bread made from coarse flour, bran, mushrooms.

Bowel cleansing before the study is performed independently by the patient. There are several ways to do this.

  • Cleansing with enemas

To do this, you will need a mug of Esmarch and water, the temperature of which should not exceed 35-37 C. On the eve of the study, at lunch, you need to drink 2 tablespoons of castor oil or 150 ml of a 30% solution of MgSO4 (magnesia sulfate), which will contribute to high-quality purification. In the evening, after an independent act of defecation, you need to make two enemas at 20.00 and 22.00, and then in the morning at 7-8 hours on the day of the study, you need to repeat one enema.

For the procedure, the Esmarch mug must be filled with 1.5-2 liters of water. Lubricate the tip with vaseline or baby cream. After the introduction of the tip, you need to open the valve and water will begin to flow into the intestine.

  • Cleaning with medical preparations

Modern medicine offers a fairly large number of drugs that can be used to conduct a high-quality intestinal cleansing without using enemas. To choose a drug, you should consult your doctor.

The last light dinner and medication should be taken on the eve of the study at 20: 00. Before the study, it is permissible to drink a glass of sweet tea.

On average, the study, with the registration of the protocol and conclusion, lasts about 36 minutes.


Enterography (X-ray examination of the small intestine)

Brief description of the study: under the X-ray examination in an upright position, the patient drinks 200 ml of barium suspension to exclude gross changes in the esophagus and stomach. Then, after 30 minutes, an overview X-ray of the abdominal cavity is performed in an upright position. After that, the patient drinks another 200 ml of barium suspension, after which survey and sighting radiographs of the small intestine with compression are performed every hour until the contrast suspension enters the large intestine.

Indications for the procedure are the following symptoms: abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, evaluation of postoperative changes in the small intestine, as well as diseases: inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis with reflux ileitis), celiac disease, tumors of the small intestine, diverticular disease of the small intestine, adhesions in the abdominal cavity and pelvis, internal and external hernias, motor disorders of the small intestine.
