Stages of emotional burnout
NewsEmotional burnout is not an instantaneous process, it develops gradually over time.
What first of all you need to pay attentionto to determine the first signs of burnout:
- Sleep problems (inability to fall asleep quickly, intermittent sleep, early awakening)
- Frequent headaches, usually increasing in the evening
- Impaired memory and concentration
- Reduced sexual activity
- Weakening of physical endurance
- Motivation disorders ("I don't want to", "I can't do it anymore", " I'm tired of everything»)
- Mood swings, emotional intemperance
- Increased irritability, touchiness
- Vulnerability, tearfulness ("tears are close»)
Psychologists G. Freudenberger and G. North divided the process of burnout into 12 stages, each of which characterizes the details of this state.
1. Obsessive desire to prove yourself
- The desire to achieve goals, recognition from colleagues, excessive desire for success
2. Work harder and harder
- A person takes on more and more tasks
3. Neglecting your own needs
- Such needs as sleep, food, entertainment, etc. are devalued and neglected
4. Displacement of internal conflicts
- There is a feeling and understanding that something is going wrong, but this is not given any importance
5. Revision of your own values
- A person revises their values in view of the current agenda of the need to work more and more
6. Denial of emerging problems
7. Avoidance, termination of participation
- Social contacts are limited to a minimum, there is alienation and isolation
8. Obvious behavioral changes
- Others see apathy, irritability and a reduced emotional state, but the person himself may not notice it
9. Depersonalization, depersonalization
- A person loses contact with himself and with others. Life is becoming increasingly automated
10. Inner emptiness
- The feeling of emptiness and exhaustion increases
11. Depression
- A sense of meaninglessness, hopelessness

It is important to note that these stages do not always follow each other in the given order. Some go through all 12 stages, while others experience only selective symptoms.
