Lung cancer. MCSC Patient History

News

A 62-year-old patient applied to the MCSC named after A.S. Loginov. For the past 5 years, he has been bothered by a dry cough and severe shortness of breath when walking.

Also at the consultation, the man said that he has been smoking for more than 47 years.He regularly underwent computed tomography of the lungs in the clinic, but at the last study he was diagnosed with pathology.

The pulmonologist diagnosed interstitial pulmonary fibrosis and recommended antifibrotic therapy to the man, which slows down the progression of pulmonary fibrosis.

To clarify the diagnosis, the patient was sent for hospitalization to the pulmonology department of the MCSC.Specialists of our Center have conducted a number of modern diagnostic studies:

  • bronchoscopy (examination of bronchi using an optical device – a bronchoscope);
  • cryobiopsy (a technique in which a sample of lung tissue is obtained using a flexible bronchoscope);
  • histological and immunohistochemical examination of the biopsy (examination of tissue samples under a microscope, which determines pathological changes, the stage of the disease, etc.).

Based on all the examinations carried out, our doctors diagnosed the man with lung cancer and prescribed him chemotherapy.

The patient had risk factors for lung cancer, a long smoking history and chronic lung pathology. But changes in the lungs on CT are not always a sign of squamous cell carcinoma. Only thanks to morphological verification using cryobiopsy was it possible to establish the correct diagnosis.

Oncological lung diseases occupy the 1st place in the structure of oncological diseases in men and the 1st place in mortality in the world. The most common symptoms are cough and shortness of breath, less often – hemoptysis, chest pain. Timely diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer significantly affect the duration and quality of life of the patient.
