Hernias of the anterior abdominal wall

A hernia is the exit of the contents of the abdominal cavity beyond its limits through natural or acquired defects of the abdominal wall.

Depending on the place of exit of the hernia is divided into:

  • inguinal,
  • umbilical,
  • thighs,
  • white line,
  • postoperative (hernia through a defect in the abdominal wall in the area of the postoperative scar).

Causes of anterior abdominal wall hernia:

  • hereditary predisposition;
  • age (weakness of the abdominal wall in children of the first year of life, changes in the abdominal wall in old people);
  • gender (features of the structure of the pelvis and the large size of the femoral ring in women, the presence of the inguinal canal in men);
  • obesity;
  • weight lifting;
  • constipation;
  • smoking.

Symptoms.

The first symptoms of a hernia are discomfort and pain in the place where the hernia is formed.

Further, with physical exertion, straining, coughing, a "bump" appears on the anterior abdominal wall or in the groin, which disappears lying down.

Over time, the protrusion increases in size.

Diagnostics.

The diagnosis of anterior abdominal hernia is usually established during a medical examination. Of the instrumental methods of examination, ultrasound or computed tomography can be prescribed.

Treatment of anterior abdominal wall hernias is only SURGICAL. Timely access to the doctor-before the development of complications that can be life-threatening, provides the best results of treatment.

The purpose of the hernia surgery is to eliminate the hernial protrusion and close the place through which the hernia came out with its own tissues or special mesh endoprostheses. Only the knowledge of the entire wide range, the correct individual selection of the prosthesis for the patient, as well as the ability to properly install and fix it, guarantee the success of the operation. Therefore, the treatment of hernias of the anterior abdominal wall should be carried out in a center with extensive experience in performing these operations.

The "gold standard" for the treatment of anterior abdominal wall hernias at the Loginov Moscow State Medical Center is minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, in which small punctures are made instead of large incisions, through which the operation is performed. These operations are also performed using the DaVinci robot.
