Microscopic colitis

Microscopic colitis (MC) it is a rare form of inflammatory disease of the colon, which is characterized by special changes in the colon.

The etiology of the disease is unknown. It is assumed that microscopic colitis develops as a result of the interaction of several factors, among which are of certain importance

  • heredity,
  • the state of the intestinal microflora,
  • immune disorders.

The dominant, and often the only clinical manifestation in such patients is recurrent diarrhea without pathological impurities. In addition, the patient may be concerned about pain and bloating. The colon on palpation is usually dilated, moderately dense consistency, painful.

The diagnosis of microscopic colitis can be assumed in the presence of watery diarrhea that lasts for more than 4 weeks.
During endoscopic examination, changes in the mucous membrane are usually not detected. To make an accurate diagnosis, it is necessary to conduct a histological examination of pieces (biopsies)of the colon mucosa. Based on the study of histological preparations, lymphocytic colitis (the presence of significant infiltration of the colon mucosa by intraepithelial lymphocytes with preserved mucosal architectonics) and collagen colitis (thickening of the basement membrane due to collagen deposits in it) are distinguished.

To date , complex methods of therapy have been developedthat can significantly improve the quality of life of patients with this disease. Bismuth preparations, adsorbents, antibiotics, topical glucocorticosteroids are used as symptomatic treatment.
