Whipple's disease

Whipple's disease is a systemic disease in which the small intestine, lymph nodes, synovial membranes of the joints, eyes, heart, lungs, and brain are involved in the pathological process.

The cause of the disease.

The disease is caused by the microbe Tropheryma Wippelei in individuals with impaired humoral immunity.

Clinical symptomsthat allow you to suspect the disease: 

  • temperature rise
  • polyarthritis,
  • pleurisy
  • pericarditis
  • uveit 
  • lymphadenopathy,
  • diarrhea
  • exudative enteropathy syndrome 
  • CNS damage : memory impairment, depression, dementia, psychosis.

The main method of diagnosing the disease is:

morphological examination of biopsies of the small intestine mucosa obtained by esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGDS) from the distal duodenum. 


The main treatment of the disease is the use of antibacterial therapy with drugs. Treatment is long-term – from 8 months to 2 years.

The danger of this disease is the development of a severe syndrome of impaired absorption and irreversible damage to the nervous system. The disease can be fatal if it is not diagnosed in time and treatment is not carried out.
