Intestinal pseudoobstruction

Chronic intestinal pseudoobstruction (HIPO) - a rare, disabling violation of the motility of the gastrointestinal tract, similar to a mechanical obstruction, but without a mechanical obstacle. Hence the name pseudoobstruction.

Causes: HYPO is caused by neuromyopathy-a violation of the motility of smooth muscles and the nervous system of the gastrointestinal tract.

The disease occurs in both children and adults. There are primary pseudoobstruction caused by a genetic predisposition, and secondary, which is based on a number of diseases: autoimmune, endocrine, neurological, oncological.

The clinical symptomsthat allow you to suspect the disease include:

  • constipation
  • abdominal pain
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • bloating
  • diarrhea
  • weight loss

At first, the disease occurs in the form of" acute attacks", during which all the symptoms worsen. Then the complaints become permanent.

In the presence of the presented symptoms, it is necessary to contact a specialist who will assess the condition and send it for examination.

The main diagnostic method is X-ray examination. It will eliminate mechanical obstruction, establish the duration of stagnation of the contrast suspension, the presence of expansion of the loops of the small intestine.

With persistent motility disorders and prolonged stagnation of intestinal contents in the small intestine, a syndrome of excessive bacterial growth develops, which leads to the penetration of microbes from the intestine into the blood and other organs, causing septic conditions. Symptoms of impaired absorption increase: protein-free edema, hypovitaminosis, weight loss, cachexia appear. In the blood, anemia, leukocytosis, accelerated ESR increases.

Treatment: diet therapy – food is liquid, pureed, rich in protein, with a restriction of fat, fiber. If it is impossible to eat due to nausea and vomiting, it is possible to complete parenteral nutrition: the introduction of protein, fat, glucose, salts, and vitamins into the blood. Drug therapy includes drugs that stimulate motor skills, antibiotics that suppress microbial growth.
