- ulcerative colitis (UC) – affects the colon and is characterized by inflammation of the mucous membrane;
- Crohn's disease (CD) – affects any part of the gastrointestinal tract: from the oral cavity to the anus.
Today IBD is one of the most serious problems in gastroenterology:
- the causes of the disease are unknown;
- variety of extra-intestinal symptoms;
- frequent relapses, dangerous complications;
- the difficulty of selecting an effective treatment.
It is important to note that a lot of time often passes from the moment the first symptoms appear to the diagnosis, since there is still no gold standard for the diagnosis of IBD in the world.
