Ulcerative colitis

Ulcerative colitis, or non-specific ulcerative colitis (NAC) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease of the colon mucosa that occurs as a result of the interaction between genetic factors and environmental factors, characterized by damage to the colon mucosa and frequent exacerbations. Currently, the term "ulcerative colitis"is used in the literature.

From the history of the disease

Ulcerative colitis was first described in 1842 in the report of the prominent scientist K. Rokitansky "On catarrhal inflammation of the intestine".

This disease, together with Crohn's disease, belongs to the group of inflammatory bowel diseases. In ulcerative colitis, the inflammation affects only the mucous membrane of the colon and is called colitis.

On average, 7 to 15 new cases of ulcerative colitis per 100,000 people are detected annually, and in recent years there has been a sharp increase in the incidence of ulcerative colitis.

Symptoms:

  • diarrhea,
  • blood in the stool,
  • mucus in the feces,
  • abdominal pain,
  • bloating,
  • increased fatigue,
  • increased body temperature,
  • loss of appetite and weight loss.

Causes of the disease

To date, the causes of the disease are not fully known. There are several risk factors that affect the appearance of ulcerative colitis:

  • the presence among close relatives of patients with non-specific ulcerative colitis of the intestine or Crohn's disease, also characterized by a chronic inflammatory process of the intestinal walls
  • ulcerative colitis often provokes infections of a bacterial and viral nature
  •  environmental factors

Most often, non-specific colitis is registered at a young age, from 20 to 25 years, the second most vulnerable age group is 55-65 years.

Timely detection and proper treatment of ulcerative colitis prevents possible complications and contributes to the prevention of bowel cancer!

The department of treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases of the MCSC has the latest opportunities for timely diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases.

The accumulated unique experience in the use of biological therapy, the use of stem cells in complex therapy, especially in the early stages of the disease, allows you to refuse to take some medications that have many side effects.
