Plasmapheresis
Human blood consists of cells (white blood cells, red blood cells, platelets) and the liquid part – plasma. A large number of harmful substances are dissolved in water or are associated with plasma proteins. Circulating in the patient's blood, these substances can cause significant harm to health. To purify the blood in such cases, it is necessary to remove the "contaminated" plasma. For this purpose, a plasmapheresis procedure is performed.
Plasmapheresis is a method based on the removal of human plasma and replacement with donor or blood-substituting solutions without removing their own blood cells. In other words, the patient is returned to his own blood cells, dissolved in a new "clean" plasma. Plasmapheresis removes "large" molecules, such as: antibodies, cholesterol, lipids, poisons that bind to blood proteins, etc.
