Lactase deficiency? Fast and reliable diagnostics in MCSC

News

Almost every person has encountered disorders of the digestive tract. Often the reason is obvious – there are errors in nutrition or infectious diseases. However, sometimes it takes a long time to determine the cause of diarrhea, bloating and other symptoms. In this case, the presence of lactase deficiency is often suspected.

Lactase deficiency (LN) – a disease characterized by the absence or insufficiency in the small intestine of an enzyme called lactase.  It breaks down lactose (milk sugar), a carbohydrate found in dairy products.

If there is no lactase enzyme or little, there is a violation of the absorption of dairy products. Then lactose, not digested in the small intestine, enters the large intestine, where it causes the fermentation process and the appearance of symptoms.:

  • abdominal discomfort;
  • bloating;
  • rumbling in the stomach;
  • loose stools.

There are two types of LN:

  • Primary – genetically determined lactose intolerance, which is associated with insufficient production of the enzyme lactase.
  • Secondary occurs due to damage to the cells of the small intestine as a result of infections.

In the MCSC named after A.S. Loginov, you can undergo an examination and reliably find out if you have lactase deficiency. Our Center is a leading institution in Russia, which has been developing methods for diagnosing carbohydrate malabsorption and methods for correcting lactase deficiency in adults for more than 20 years.

The department of treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases uses modern methods for diagnosing lactase deficiency:

  • An express test for diagnosing the activity of the lactase enzyme in order to determine the degree of lactase deficiency.

During the gastroscopy, the specialist will perform a small intestine tissue sampling, followed by an express test for lactase activity.

  • Breathing hydrogen test with lactose.

If you have already performed an endoscopic examination or are not planning it, then a convenient option would be a breath test that will help measure the amount of hydrogen in the exhaled air after loading with lactose.

The above methods are suitable for every patient.

In the presence of flatulence, bloating and discomfort in the abdomen, stool disorders, you need to conduct a study and exclude lactase deficiency.
